[NOTES FROM THE BOTANIC GARDENS.
A specimen of Broughtonia litacina which, is now carrying 8 spikes of bloom may be soon banging from one of the crosshura in the No. 2 house. The spikes are about. 18 inchos long with several flowers at the ends. The plant evidently gets its Name from th colour of the flowers, which are about 2 inches across. The leaves are in hairs about 6 inches long and an inch broad. This orchid was introduced into England from Jamaica, whore
1793. It was obtained from that island through the kindness of Lady Blake, to whose interest during the last dre years the Public Gardens owe so many novelties.

The Colonel aid he had only enough troops for the security of Hongkong, and he, His Excellency, asked, "Whargarethe Volunteers? Colonel Eisdale replied that he did not know. To this be replied, "Go and get them, and utilise them for the protection of Kowloon. That was the first time in which they had basu called out for the defence of the Colony. Out of this arose the knowledge of the fact that the Corps should be sa efficient one, and that it should be made sa as speedily as possible. With view to this, a Regular officer was made commandant. He thought they had to look back with great pleasare apon the fact that they were one of the first corps in the Empire to volunteer for service in South Africa. They were not required, bat ho had no doubt if they had gone they would have done as well as the volunteers who did go. We had been taught a great lesson by the war in South Africa. It had tangbt us to see that every man who could use rifle joined the Volunteer Corps in Hong kong. They were at the present moment a part of the garrison of this Colony. They were included in the military forces of Hongkong and would be required to take their place in any operations which the garrison was called upon to perform, He desired that the Corps should be efficient, and hoped that those who were in the Corps would encourage those who had not joined to do so, and take their place be necessary. Golf is reported to have caught on very strongly in New Zealand. A large growing overpor, Bignonia Chan berlaynai, is now in flower trained on the trollis at the east end of the aviary in the old gardou, and another plaut may be seen similarly treated on the rosebed terrace.
