HONGKONG'S NAVAL DOCKYARD.

In the new issue of Brassey's Navat Annyal we flad the following remarks upon Hong, kou a Dockyard --

"

It is unnecessary to insist on the value of Hongkong us a naval base and as the centre of British trade in the China Sons. The shipping entered and cleared in 1900 aggregated over 14,000,000 tons. Including junka, the total amounted in 1901 to 19,325 000 tons. The scheme for the extension of Mongkong Dock yard has gradually grown, through successive Naval Werks Acts, from a moderate proposal, involving the expenditure of £340,00, to one on which it in estimated that £1,475,000 will be pent, The pressut yard will be increased from

I feel convinced from the sympathy already expressed in varies quarters that a society for the provention ernelty to animals will meet with the required support, once a delipite scheme is put before the public, and I am encouraged in the belief that our Chinese friends will also readily join in the moverament from the fuct that charitables persoas in the interior of Chinu foul and maintala asylums for ownerless and sick animals. While asking assistance from the public wo must not ignore the good work done by the Government, which is fully alive to the neceurity for putting down all fortas of cruelty to animals, and the ample provision to deal with this evil provided for by the law; but as wo know how greatly this good work is supplemented else where by similar institutions we would wish to es in our Colony a like society. Thursday, 25th July. BEFORE MR. T. SERCOMBE SMITH (POLICE MAGISTRATE).

COMMITTED TO THE BEEGIONS.

Fight men who were brought up by the Water Police on a charge of robbery and assault at Deep Bay were committed by his Worably to the Criminal Brasions for trial.

The affair appears to have been the outcome of a long-standing lead among the people j living in the villages that lio round Deep Bay. These villages are situated in Chinesa territory, bnt the waters of the bay are British. Erorg day a native boat carries passengers out froma the shore to join a longkang lannel, the Lee Fal, and the villagers have contended all along that so ranch toll per bed should be paid in respect of these passengers, a domard which the owner of the launch and the boatmen very naturally refused to accads to. So acuto did the disputa became at last that on Wednesday a party of villagers to the number of 3 or 4 went off in boats, armed with bamboo poles and iren hoes, and attacked the passenger-boat. They drove the master of the boat into the water, towed the craft on to the beach, broke her up and carried away the rousins to be used for fire-wool, and they also beat the fols saverely and left him lying on the shore,

The muster of the bout e me to Hot gkong on the Lee Fat and lodged a complaint with Inspector Langley of the Water Polics at Tsimshatsui, stating that the robbers had stolen $10 bolonging to him when they raided the boat. The Inspector despatched Detective-Sergeant O'Sullivan to the scene in a police launch, and as a result of enquirien made these eight mon

There are two theories in currency regarding the outbreak, the Observer says. One is that owing to come derangement of the electric wires attached to the roof of the Wat, the dome caught fire. Another story is that, the day

wore duly made to the priests zed that vuo being the third of Buddhist Lout, offerings the candles burning beside the pooms upset and caused the outbreak. But is was stated itat no ono was in the building when the fire occurred, no offering of poons there, that there was and that there were no lights except the electric lights. In that case the electric wires would

seem to farnish the only posible clue to tho cause of tlie outbreak.

The Bangkon Tmes gives the following" KING EDWARD VII,” : history of the building: The Phra Buddba Prang Prainte, like the temple of the Emerald Buddha itself, dates back to the time of the first King of the dynasty. There was formerly a largo pond in that part of the grounds, and the first king of the dynasty had the original build- ing erected in the centre of the pond to serve at library. But in the ceremonies attending the completion-of the building it was set on fire. by the fireworks used, and burned to the ground. Then the wholo pond was filled in and the building re-erected. The building now dee troyed, however, was erected on the same sita by the late King Phra Chom Klao (Maha! Mongkut to contain the Emerald Baddie, which His Majesty thought ought to have a special temple for itself. It was on that account that the building, though one of the Wat buildings, came to stand within its own grounds surrounded by a wall. Tradition has it that after this pagoda was finished the King bed a dream in which the status appeared to him and said it did not wish to be moved from where it was. The Emerald Buddha was accordingly left in the royal temple which one know a Wat Pra Keo, and the other remained a very fine temple technically a Phra-prang- with an altar and Baddhes.
