The Attorney-General stated that on 6th July Mr. Thiel missed a nickel watch and gold chain from his bedroom. At half-past nine o'clock that morning, it would be proved, the prisoner pawned the chain underá false namo. On 14th inst, prisoner was arrested with the pawn-ticket, in his possession, On the 14th Mr. Blason missed from his room a diamond ring and Mr. Finke missed two gold studs and two gold sleeve-links. It would be proved that the prisoner was on duty near their rooms until half-past fire o'clock that morning. Later the same morning the prisoner pawned the ring, the studs and the links, also under a false name. In 1970 he was taken to Hongkong by Mr. W. M. Deane, M.A., C.M.G., who was then Cap- taín Superintendent of Police at Hongkong. Mr. Quincey than joined the European section of the hongkong Police. He gradually worked bizzself up to the rank of Inspector, and was in charge of the Criminal Investigation Depart- ment for 15 years. He retired on pension in 1897, aftor serving 27 years. Shortly after his retirement he was telegraphed for by the Shanghai Toolai to take charge of the Shanghai Native Police, which had been newly organised. In April, 1902, Viceroy Yuan Shikai telegraph ed to Mr. Quiacey and offered him the position" of Superintendent of Police at Psoting-in, in the province of Chibli, which he accepted. Sabsequently, when the Tientsin Native City was handed back by the Allied Commanders,

the Viceroy's Pollon were transferred from Paosing-fa to Tientsin.

Lieutenant Charles Quincey, son of Captain Quincey, is 21 years of age. He was born in Hongkong and educated at Queen's College. Early in 1900 he joined the Ist Chinese Regi- ment as Sergeant-Interpreter at Weiksiwei:] He had scarely finished bis drill when the Boxer trouble broke out in the North of China, and 300 men of his regiment were ordered to prvoesd to Taka.
