Captain and Mrs. Arbuthuat returned last night on the Stanley from their trip on the Went River The steamer left Hoogkong un the 11th and anchored the same night under Lautan. Next morning Macao was reached and there a step was made until Tuesday at noon. Samshui wis the next place of call; then Shuiting was made for, the Sandpiperacting as a bolated escort en router. On Wednesday the Stanley went to Lokynm and Captain and Mrs. Arbuthnot made a trip by boat and mountain- shair to the Buddhist Temple. On the 20th they returned to Samshui, on the 21st they breakfasted on board the Sandpiper, öfter which the Stanley presveded by way of Moneypenny Creek to Castor, arriving at 3 p.m. ou Sanday. She left for Hongkong yesterday morning at 9 o'clock and in the record time of 5 hours reach Tungekung (Lantau) where a stay of two hours was made, and the Stanley got along. side Blake Pier at 7.15 last night. Captain W. Robinson was in command of the Stanicy during the trip and did all the piloting

During the week ended 20th June there were 32 cases of plague (2 Europeans, 1 Indian. 1-3 per cent. Portuguese, and 48 Chinese) and 47 deaths (1 Jadian, 1 Portuguese, and 45 Chinese). Two Chineso died of cholera during the same period, An analysis of the year's figures shows that from 1st January till the 20th inst, there were 1,222 cases of plagus distributed as follows 32 Europeans, 1,132 Chinese, and 59 other Asiatis. The deaths numbered 1,059, namely, 4 Europeans, 1,053 Chinese, and 32 other Asiatics.

Why should we in Hongkong have to pay on some slocka 2 per cent to 4 por cent, to a broker when in other ports in the East the charge is 1 per cent. to the seller only on small stock and a small percentage on large stocks? A fair charge would be 1 per cent, commission to the soller on stocks to the value of $50, & per cent. from $50 to $200, and 4 per cant. on high values, and it is to be hoped that the Chamber of Com mares will take the matter up again and got it settled by a charge of a fair parcentage on the turnover (to the seller).
