TRISH UNIVERSITY EDUCATION.

London, 12th March.

The Royal Commission appointed to enquire inta Irish University Education recommende the creation of a Roman Catholic College at Dublin, with ample endowment, the governing hody to include two bishops of the Roman Catholic Church, two representatives of Dublin corporation, and two Crown nominees. The Commission also recommends that the professors of the college should be forbidden to teach say thing contrary to the doctrine of the Roman Catholic Church.

London, 13th March.

The Roman Catholie bishops of Ireland and the Irish Prees are dissatisfied with the report of the University Royal Commission. They assert that Roman Catholics are entitled to an university. The Board of Trinity College, Dublin, emphatically refuse to entertain the proposal for the foundation of a Roman Catholic College to be incorporated with Dublin University, but they are willing to fake every step to provide safeguards for the Roman Catholic faith in the existing colleges.

THE STRENGTH OF THE ARMY.

London, 12th Maroh.

In the House of Commons yesterday the discussion on the motion of Mr. I. C. Guost (Conservative Plymouth) to reduce the strength of the Army by 27,000 men, which is approxi- mately the augmentation of infantry in the last five years, was concluded.

Mr. St. John Brodrick, the Secretary of :State for War, said that the summary reduo- tion of the forces by 27,000 men would produce chaos in the military system.

Sir Edward Grey (Liberal, Berwick-on- Ted) said that in the event of a straggle on the Indian frontier 40,000 men stationed in -South Africa would be more valuable than 1120,000 men in England. Besides, South Africa was a bettor and a cheaper training ground than England."

Mr. A. J. Balfour, the Premier, carnestly appealed to the House not to upset the carefully elaborated soheme which had already been sanctioned by Parliament. It would be wrong to make reductions in the Army at a time when the reservos were dangarously low.

The amendment was defeated by 91 votes, the division being:-

THE NEW ZEALAND LOANS.

London, 12th March. The Westminster Gazette sates that the threats made by Mr. Seddon, the Premier of New Zealand, against the Loudon nioney lenders in Consequends of the partial failure of the New Jonn, are nonsensical, and anggests that Mr. Seddon is prepared to cut off bis nose to spite

his face..

[In the Botirse of a political address Mr. Sedden said that no money-landers in the world would dictate the policy of Now Zealand. The Government had £900,000 at deposit in the banks of the country. It was

quite possible that if the money-lunders attempted to dictate the policy of the country there was a way out of the difficulty. The money-lenders would haren lesson taught them, and they had better leave New Zealand alone.] ALLEGED BRIBERY IN CANADA,
