Shortly after nine o'clock on the evening of the 19th fast. two played-out asilors from the schooner Segnoid ran into the San Fermando Police Station and asked for help on board of the boat, claiming that there was shooting and other going on aboard the vessel. The police dramatio features attending the performance department Immediately tried to secure the services of a physiciou, but without avail, and while they wore arguing the question a Cablenews representative informed them that he had chartore the launch Bonny and would be glad to take the police alongside the ship on which the traublo existed. As it happened, the Bucky O'Neill was laid up for repairs, and the invitation extended to the guardians of the river and harbour was not only gratefully, but very promptly, accepted.

The Sequoia cleared on Thursday and had by tacking nearly reached Corregidor before Captain White, the master of the bost, realized that he hate turbulent crew on his hands. Two well-known characters in Manila by the name of Murphy and Chamberlain atowed themselves away up the wind-jammer, and with a generous supply of whisky soon made their presence known. Captain White bad his wife on board, and gave one of his seamen his resolver with instructions to go forward and quell any trouble that might exist in the forecastle, from which place the Bonads of strife emanated. The sailor in whose custody the revolver was placed not only obeyed orders but obeyed it to the letter, as he promptly shot Murphy through the arm and threatened to shoot the rest of the crowd on board if orders were not promptly obeyed.

Captain White stated that the men refused to lower jibs under a fresh squall encountered off Corregidor, and Mr. Johosen, formerly of the Lallic Bouc, whow he had employed as first mate, was in a state of intoxication and totally unable to give proper instructions to the men nader him. The belligerente were alt orrested and brought ashore with the captain as the principal witness, and the injured man was sent to the San Juan de Dios hospital for treatment, at midnight.

Captain White in his testimony at the San Fernando Station told a story that makes the uprising aboard of his vessel little less than absolate piracy. His first wate, by soms means, had stored the canvas bag containing the clothes of the stowaways in his own room, and from the half-sober remarks of the prisoners brought ashore it looks like a pre-arranged scheme to virtually see the vessel or at least

THE PANAMA CANAL PROJECT. All the preliminaries for the solution of the long-pending question of the construction of a ship canal to join the Atlantis with the Pacific may not be regarded as settled. From the new plan has risen like a phonix, and Panema ashes of the ruined project of M. de Lesseps a bas borne off the palm from Nicaragus. As ona se it became clear that the vast financial resources of the United States would be brought to bear on the robeme, its realisation was a fore- gone conclusion. The war with Spain and the consequent acquisition of the Philippines no | doubt gase the Bnal impulse in the States; the urgent necessity of a short and direct son. nection between the two great oceans became more manifest than ever before. The first thing to be done, however, was to come to terms with England, and this was adroitly managed. The Clayten Bulwer treaty of 1850, providing that the United States and England should jointly create and control a waterway between the two oceans has been superseded by the Hay-Pauncefote treaty conceding to the American full Hberty to undertake the task alove. Two other 1 Brfies bad now to be negotiated with the Republic of Colombia and the Panama Canal Company, or, is plecs of the latter (in case the Nicaragus route should be chosen) the Republic of Nicaragua. For a long time it appeared as if the northerly and more level rente was in the gra.ter favour. One of its advantages was an abordant and constant cupply of water for the locks, besides which the Nicaragua Lake offered to the United States a splendid and spacious naval harbour. Two cironmstances, however, probably militated against the choics of this route: the volcanic
