Muscatel showed up at the start, with Portusis and Claimant in hot pursuit, aud this was the order of the field when they passed the Grand Stand for the first time, Silver Fox, Winter Roso, Joker, and Mad Mullah tailing out in the order named. Going round to the back stretch Portasia begun to show up well and went to the front followed by Joker. By the time the Black Rock was reached, however, Muscatel had rugsized its position closely followed by Silver Fox with Winter Rose lying a good third. So fast was the pace set by Muzentel and Silver Fox coming round the boud nad up the straight that the rest of the field was hopelessly ontdistanced and these two raced home neck and neck; resalt, a dead heat, Winter Rose a poor third.

A pièce were in accord with the spirit of gaialy at present abroad in the Colony, a spirit engendered by the recurrence of our annual Race Meeting, which everyone feels bound to make an effort to attend, could not have been chosen than that of A Gaiety Girl, the comedy singed at the Theatre Royal last evening by Pollard's

versatile jarenile combination. I Nevilless to say, the house was full, and was never in better bumour: thoe whose fancies at the Races had realised expectations and justified expenditure in the backing of the wero fnued to the necessary appreciative pitch, whilst less fortuante speculators forgot there things that had, alas proved Bat-broken- reads and laughed as heartily as anyone at the humorous story related from across the fastlights. Animated in action gust bright in dialogue, A Gaiety Girl possesses an attraction equal to if not greater than that of The Belle of New York, than which it is more Loisterous. However, perhaps even

putting distinctions to one side, the production, admirably staged, proved a worthy addition to the successes plready gained by the Lollip

appreciated to weed either introduction er ecommandation, and so we shall content ourselves merely with discussing the appearance made by the ambitions little performers who essayed ita presentment.

The dead heat was run off after allowing the ponies a breathing space. Muscatel jumped off in froot but Mr. Moller rode easy titians. The comedy is too well known and Silver Fox drew level, which position was main, tained until they neared the Black Rock. Going up the hill Muscatel drew ahead and was leading by live lengths opposite Wengnei- chong village while Mr. Hart Buck's pony was showing evident signs of distress. Both were under the whip coming home but the result was aever in denbt and Muscatel won as it liked with 20 lengths in hand.
