Although a general holiday, Christmas Day passed off very quietly in the Colony. Christmas Night. Time-Long after midnight. Very dark. Weather Cold with an atmosphere damp and raw. Sky overcast. A little ruin falling.
Returning from midnight wars, at many of the street corners and places where the hydrant supply taps are situated, numbers of the very) poor, undercled, and in many cases ragged people of both sexes, could be seen, who, at 1.30 am, had taken up their stations, huddled together as close to the tips as possible, there

THEATRE ROYAL.
The members of Miss Janet Waldorf's Dramatic Company returned to Hongkong early on Christmas morning. They appeared on Monday and Tuesday evenings at the Canton e.ch Club Theatre on the bhameen, and on occasion the house was, crowded. The pieces selected were The Lady of Ostend und Turned Up, the desire having been generally expressed that the Company should appear in comedies. The trip provided a great deal of interest ta the Company, who greatly admired the sights of the city. They devoted the whole day on Wednesday to sight-seeing and visiteul most of the places of peculiar interest in Couton.
Last night (Boxing night) the season bere was resumed by the production of the farcical comedy Turned Up. This piece was appro- priately selected for a holiday night, and proved vory therry antertainment indeed. Whatever the merits of this comedy may be, the fact ma-t |· be conceded that the situations are exceedingly. comical. It is much boader bail than any other of the faroical comedies in the company's repertoire, but it is so clevert constructed that one has no time to consider the probabilities of the positions the charact te find themselves in. Nor would it be wise to attempt to describe a plot the fluctuations of which become sa involve. It is a delightful absurdity, brimful of sparkling lines" and springing new sar- prises at every turn.
We have en several occasionu enjoyed the Waldorf Company in comedy. They fall into it as naturally as though it was their particular element, and were not a dramatic Company selected for classic plays. It is quite common at Christmas in big theatres to find operatic
actists of high rank throwing off the mantle of their art and becoming mere pantomimists for the occasion, so we find the Waldorf Company who have delighted Hongkong andieners in some of the monsterpieces of Shakespeare, Dans, Sadormann and others, revolting in broad farce. And we must say the transition at Bach a time is both agreeable to theatregoers and refreshing to the players. A crawled audience last evening testiffed by frequent applause their hanrty appreciation of the piece. Mr Norval
McGregor again proved himself a comedian of the first rank, while Miss Janet Waldorf layed- artists as Mrs. Dow-Currier and Mr. Wilson with her usual grace. With such ecplished Forbes in preminent roles the action of the Terned Up will be repented tonight. Ou Monday The Lady of Ostend will be revived, and on Tuesday Comille vill bo put on again for the last time. Sweet Nell of Oul Drury will be the last but by no means least big attraction
