the zorinal date has brought about a stoto j of affairs but little more promising than last year. As we remarked when dealing with this subject recently, we are prepared to go on short commoss sooner this year, and we have learnt some leasons in the way of economy, but we have got to face another possible famine. What steps, we are well justified in asking, does the Government propose to take to meet the scarcity? Is the provision of an intermit tent, supply to be the only measure of relief, unaccompanied by a hastening on of the new works? A statement by the Govern- ment, at the next meeting of the Legislative Council would not only bo very welcome but may also be easidered as due to the public on whom the hardships of a water- famine fall. We hope that the opportunity will not be list.
The correspondent of the London Standard in Paris statos that M. Hanotux also diep proves of the Convention.
