THE NEW KING EDWARD
HOTEL
i
The 1st of next mouth will soo the formal inauguration of the King Edward Hotel, which promises to be one of the finest and best appointed Institutions of its kind in the Far East. This building which is so soon to be open od will eventually form an unners to the large Hotel now being erected on the west side of Ics House Street. It occupies a very favourable position as regards the Harbour sad the business entre of the City. Considering that the block is not long out of the builder's Lends, the speed with which the furnishing of the Hotel las been pushed on is surprising, and it redounds to the credit of the mangement that the establishment is now so near completion. The Hotel has the advantage of being housed in
■ splendid building and it is not saying too much to avor that the interior is well worthy the floe outward appearance which the structure presents. From Des Voeux Road, entrance is obtained through the main doer to the ground Hoor, The entrance hall is handsomely afted up and decorated with palma. To the right and left respectively are the bar and billiard- room; directly in front is the dining-room. This is a spacious apartment, well Eghted and ventilated and onmike of accommodating nearly 200 persons. Its dimensions are 57 feet by 40 feet. The first objects to attract the eye when one enters are two large oil paintings, 9 feet 8 inches by fee: inches, of the King and Queen, one at each end of the room. The chiffoniers and sideboards are of massive design in teak wood. Electris fans are provided, and the apartment is lighted by electricity, as in the whole building 1broughout. There is a pleasing diversity in the shape and size of the tables, so as to suit the grouping of dining parties Handsome curtains drape the windows. Opening off the dining-room is the pantry, fitted up with a steam table and all the necessary accessories, including, a hot water supply for washing purposes. Beneath the pantry are the grill-room and pastry-room, The kitchen is entirely separate from the Hatel, connecting by a covered way with the grill room, and is fitted with all the latest cooking paraphernalia. The range is a patent capable of cooking for 600 people: It was obtained from England through Messrs. Leigh & Orange, the architects of the building. In the kitchen is placed the bailer which supplies hot water to the satire Hotel. The whole of the ground floor is floored, fitted and panelled in wax-polished teak, and each room has one or more re-places with carved tank mantels and tiled atoves.
To return to the entrance hall, which is 23 feet by 12 feet, parad with encaustic tiles panelled in polished teak, and approached by a flight of granite steps, there is on the left side the billiard-room. It is 30 foot by 20 fest and contains two tables-one a Burroughs &Watts' and the other a John Roberts'. The appointments are of the most complete descrip- tinn, for billards, pool, pyramids etc. Lounges and easy-chairs are placed around the room, and the lighting, ventilation and furnishings generally are all that the most fastidious could dorite. Indeed, with regard to the billiard-room und to the lounge bar on the opposite side of the hall, corresponding to it in size and situation, it may be mentioned that they are more after, the style of a first-class club than of a hotel; and we understand that it is the intention of the manager, Mr. Wm.
