Twentieth century chemistry embraces two important new folds that of high temperaturos, made eadily available by the electric furnace, and that of low temperaturos,, economically produced by liquid air. Among numerous in- teresting products of great cold, N. D'Arsonva! mentions l.quid dzone, which is easily produced. its boiling poist being 118 deg. C. below zeru, and is perfectly stable at the temperature of liquid air (about 200 deg. below zero,, but at Its own boiling point detonates on the slightest shook. The most powerful explosive now known is a mixture of liquid ozone and selid acetylene Lertain of the light-r petroleums, soparated out by fractional distillation at low temperatures, are perfectly fluid at 190 deg. below zero, and can be used in the construction of law temperature thermomatere. Pars hydrogan can be economi- cally produced in large quantities by a now system of fractions! distillation at low temperatures.
Celluloid, for which such varied ses have been found, was originally produced as a substi tute for fast vanidhing ivory. The imitation itsof is now imilated by the remarkable prepa- ration of a Dutch inventor, who treats with acid and alcorice the waste pulp from the maun facture of potato-Boar, and dries and grinds the resulting compound. Mixed with water, forming an easily worked substituts for ivory, the powder is moulded like plester of Paris,

Hertziau waves from lightning fastes at. enormous distances have been studied by F. Larroque. An interesting fact brought out is that the waves from a great distance are practically horizontal, but those from not more than 200 miles are more vertical than horizontal, A map of the fanolions of the fore part of the brain, the froutal lobe, is the remarkable piece of work of British surgeons. The ex- pariments were tried upon chimpanzees, which rank near man in the sole of brain development, and the operations began with the making of tiny openings in the skulls of the anaesthetized animals. The wounds being healed, one pole of an electric battery was fastened to the epe's wrist, while the other, iu the form of a platinar point, was touched gently to the brain. The responses were prompt and often ladicrous, the movements of the body showing-clearly that the nerve-stations excited control respective parts lobo, the eyes and other organs of the face; the ne here indicated; the lowest part of the frontal top of the brain just behind the forehead, the tosa; a point under the bair line of the forebead, the shoulder; a little lower centre, the elbow, a section still lower, the wrist; a centro over the eyes and between the temples, the fingers and thumba, The eye-controlling centre is almost directly behind the eye, and under it are twò distinct jaw-centere, une controlling the open- fog and the other the closing of the jaw. Two cases of injury to the human brain have brea successfully treated in accordance with these facts.
Attempts have been male to measure the light of the moonless right sky. Mr. Gavin J. Burns, an English astronomer, has roughly estimated that the total light of one hemisphere equals that of 1,000 first-magnitude stars, and Prof. Simon Newcomb has perhaps more accurately-found this total light to be equal to that of 600 to 800 first-magnitude start. The brightness seems to be not entirely due to visible and invisible stars, The Zodiacal Light and the Gegenschein, a midnight glow opposite The sun's photosphere is supposed by C.
