A PORTUGUESE TRIBUTE TO THE KING.

Our contemporary 0 Porvir, in its issue of Saturday's date, prints, with portraits of Their Majesties King Edward and Queen Alexaudia, | an address of congratulation to the King on his Coronation. The address commences thus:-

For the sake of truth, both the official circaler and its replies wer unthing but a farce in the eyes of the public Now you see, Mr. Editor, that the Portaguess roder was quite sight to say what you hare stated to-day.

I have no reason to state that the rumour in Macro as to the smuggling of arms is quite well founded. My principal object is that the documents published in the last Macao Bolletim did not convit co the public of the false rumour of the alleged smuggling; on the contrary, it gives necasion for further comments.Yours,

Why the hon. member refused to accept the Colonial Treasurer's reply I fail to understand. Is it not a recognized auls of debates that although questions are, invariably put to the Clair the replies are given by the head of the department concerned.

The same hon; member: in withdrawing his amendment on the "persions to widows and orphans" said that he did not think it right to role away public money without knowing how much he was seting. This is a proper perform ance of his duties for which he is to be highly commended. It would, however, be interesting to know what the shareholders in the Chinn and Manila 3. 8: Co, who were present at the last annual meeting think of the hon. member's present attitude as compared with his action as chairman of that meeting, when they made the fatile attempt to be enlightened on the financial position of the company.

The contrast is at least instructive.-Yours. ste,

JUMPING ON THE STAE FERRY LAUNCHES.

It is a common spectacle at the Kowloon ferry wharf to see helated passengers, European and Asiatic, rushing through the barriers in an cftan vain attempt to catch a departing launch. Mr. E. Mr. Osborne went The men are having a good time.
