THE HONGKONG DAILY PRESS, TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 12cm, 1901
French cables state that a singular scene has ** just occurred at one of the theatres there, aris ing out of the attendance of Bloff, son-in-law of ex-President Krager, with a party of friends, Eloff appeared in an elaborate dress-suit, and J.immediately upon being recognised the audience rose en masse and indulged in a storm of hoots The and cries until he had left the building. motive for this demonstration appears to havo boon that Eloff, had, in popular opinion, per- Instrated an outrage ou good taste by appearing in public thus attired whilst his late comrades were fighting for their lives in South Africa.

REFORM WORK IN CHINA...
Mrs. Archibald Little how the following letter in the Times on the subject of the reform
work in China:-
14:
I think it is generally admitted that the existence of a progressive party in China headed by men like the Yangtze Viceroys preserved China from greater dina ers that have actually overtaken her, and saved the lives and property of many thousands of Europeans. The existence of that progressive party is largely due to the work done by the Society for the Diffusion of Christian and General Knowledge in Chine work which has been frequently mentioned with warm approval in your columna,The Empress's coup d'état for a time bampered its efforts. Now again the best Chinese officials are appealing to it for assistance: The Governor of Shantung, for instance, has askel its secro- tary, Mr. Timothy Richard, to draw up for him a programme of instraction in foreign learning and to furnish him with the necessary text books in order that all expectant oficials may be examined in these subjects. This is, of course, a gigantic task, int its effects upon the rising generation of Chinese officials would be of incalculable benefit.
BOERS AND LOYALISTS. Latest Cape news states that marauding par ties of Boers are burning the forms of loyalists by way of reprisal for recent drastic actions on the part of the British, and they threatsti a more bloody programme if the policy of life banishment is persiated in.

The moral influence of Bassin over China has made enormous strides in the last few years, and is bound to inoroase. There remains the possibility, already mentioned, that the Chinese may turn the tables and awarm into Siberia; but it must not be forgotten that whereas the Russian, in coming from Europe, has found elimate, the Chinese as they move north must both a better country and a more clement face the rigours of a climate unsuited to them. ibis would not obviate an economic invasion of some force, but would probably prevent such a wholesale terrent of immigration as has been represented as likely to happoa.
Finally we may quote what the writer says MANDOLINES. of Russia's idea of the integrity" of China:-
