HOM OUR CORRESPONDENT.)

Srator, 91st October. THE HOTSE-TAL The Cheng Hai Shion arrived here a few days

age and convened a meeting at the Total's temporary Yamon, with a view to fixing a date when the much talked of house-tar is to be levied. At his invitation fire prlácipal repre. sentatives of the loosi gantry and of the largest merciant horgs appeared, and after a lengthy consultation it was deckled that the tax, which is to amount to 5 per cent of the rental, is to ba collected quarterly and to commence from the 9th Chinese Moon. I am informed that those present at the meeting were of opinion that as the houses here are mainly occupied by merctants no difficulty would be experienced in collecting the tax, but they averred that the imposition would not be so easily accomplished at Chowchowin and elsewhere in this province,
