CRICKET,
PRESIDENT'S XII v. HON. SECRETARY'S XII.
In ideal cricketing weather, but not upon an ideal wicket, the Hon. Secretary's side began to bat at 11.30 a.m., on Saturday last, leading off with Maitland and Kriskenbeck, both of whom were in good fottle. It looks as if "F.M." were not going to disappoint is after all, for he played one of his own games, baffing, alike to bowler and fieldsman. If he can keep in practice, his batting, and his folding at point, should ensura him his pi ce in the XI. The bowling was changed at 25, but it was not till 40 that the 22nd. 1. He has all the makings of a tine cricketer, and we shall watch his future performances with much interest. After tifin, Mackenzie and Rotherham made a stand which yielded 31 rans. The former is, on present form, a greatly improved all-round cricketer. Hia innings contained a variety of good strokes, and, later on in the day, his bowling was excellent. He will forgive us for saying that he should abdicate his position in the slips, and fold, say, at short leg, because he is evidently unused to that position, which should be filled by men such as Dorshill or Smith or Preedy and others who are accustomed to Hold there.

Any one who has seen the British Army in Africs and who remembers the way the men, tired by long marches, reaches the bivouae ami the long weary wait on many dark and stormy nights till the scanty firea bad cooked the orgu- ing meat, cannot fail to appreciate the difference which the use of the kitchen wagon would have made in the happiness, health, and comfort of the soldiers. This difference would have been so great that it is impossible not to envy the Russians this portion of their equipment and not. to hope that the British authorities will use their way to adopt one of the most romarkable, and yet one of the simplest, means of lightening the hardships of the soldier in spor. It is trae that the use of the kitchen wagon entails a slight increase in the baggage train, but this increase is counterbalanced by the independence which ench company possesses if it carries its kitchen, larder, and wood store in ore light cart The amount of word required, is far less in an iron grate then in an open or trenched fire.
