SPORTING AND OTHER NOTES.

All the fixtures for the intport matches cannot be definitely made unt we hear how long the Straits and Shanghai Bams are going to remain here, but according to present arrange ments Hongkong will play the traits on the 11th and 12th, and the afternoon of the 13th will be kept for tennis. On the 14th and 15th, Hongkong will probably oot Shanghai, leaving the morning of the 166 free to finish off the match if necessary and the afternoon for the rest of the tannis datches. It is too early yot to say anything about the selection of a cricket team, as centers have still three weeks' practice in fit of them, and the selectors are not likely to phok their eleven will the last moment. It is the same with tonnia-there is not much to choose between Pinckney and Fontifex, and Hancock is pro bably as good as either. The final selection will have to stand over until the three have played a few sets together and it can be seen who is showing the best form the moment. The probability is that they are about level in singles and that Finckney and Hancock will make the best combination for the doubles. Shanghai is no doubt bringing down strong Leaus both for cricket and temals, and I hear they are willing to lay 3 or 4 to I on their

Have you over soon good eyeling, good races properly organised on a good track with good riders? I am getting on myself in years, but I can recol last many a good race at home in days gone by. The names of Toe Synyer, Gatehouse, Adams, and many others, even now rise before one's mind as names to conjure with. They are the names of men who, one may say, began the aport; others took it up, wal followed in their track-a countless host of others, too numerons to think off, hailing from all quarters of the globe. They found the sport fair to middling at any rate, but they had tried it. Some of Hongkong's people have tried it, and they who have, I feal sure, would not subject to do so again; those who have not tried it, lot them have a try. I think they would con come to look upon it as capital good fun, and jolly good exercise into the bargain, One diffoulty is, whore is a place to be found for a track? I have already suggested that a very suitable spot would be round the football ground next to the Race-course. There must surely be ample roem to get a 3-lap to the mile track on that ground. The football need not and would not be interfered with, the game

sports, and football, and the games could be played on the ground in the centre of the track. Access to the football ground by the players being easily afforded by an extraneo either underneath the banking of the track or across a level part of it.

THE MEETING OF THE PLANETS.

(FROM A CORRESPONDENT.] A rare and pretty phenomenon is the array of six planets in the western sky, visible those evenings, weather permitting, for a brief fort- night. The appearance at the same time, in the same part of the heavens, of six planeta, that is of uli, to be seen without the aid of a telescope, is a rare occurrence, though of far less interest to the astronomer than to the astrologer, if in this new contary there be still any straggling adepts in that forgotten lore. Such a mecting of planets has not taken place for a contury, perhaps not since the discovery of Uranus in 1781. They will como together again for another short fortnight next March, then they will part, balding on their several ways, nover to Ise seen

WANTED A BUILDING ABBOCIATION.”

Following in the wake of this society, any public-spirited gentleman, possessed of the necessary technical knowledge of the subject, will render a public baneft if he will formulate and put into operation a scheme for a Building Association in Macao. At prosent, available building sites are so very cheap that any plan would appear to be feasible. I urge this on the attention of those whose domicile here, because evidence is not wanting of the land-jobbing fond already directing his attentions to Macto. The recent completion of certain sales of the most desirable European residences along the water-front and the tenta- tire negotiations for further sequisitions at what wont, only a few years ago, have bean considered fabulous prices are indications that history like that which has been chronicled in Hongkong may be repeated at Macao.
