About forty superfluous hairs, Dr. A. Whit- fold finds, can be removed by electrolysis at une sitting. The negative electrole from a battery of about five Lerlancké cells is connected with a needle which is introduced into the neck of the hair follicle, and the patient thou grasps firmly the positive electrodo. After s few seconds bubbles of hydrogen issue from the mouth of the follicle. The needle is shortly afterward withdrawn, and after a moment or two the hair may be pulled ont very easily, the inner rootsheath coming with it without resistance if the operation has been successful.

The new range-inder of Prof. G. Forbes is designed to meet the requirements of infantry in the field. It consists of a field-glass, to be carried in the usual way, and a fokling aluminum base, which is & fout long when extended and 3 feet 3 inches when folded, weighs less than 3. prunds, and can be strapped upon the back. The base is a square tube, each half of which has at each ond a doubly reflecting glass prism. The rays of light from a distant object strike the outer pair of these four prisms, are reflected at right angles along each tube, and at the two middlu prisms into the two telescopes of the inccular. The angle hotween these rays is determined by two wires, that in one telescope being fixed, while that in the other is moved by a micrometer surow until the two wires are seen as one at the same time that the object is soon distinctly. From the angle the distance is obtained, and may be easily estimated to within 60 yards for 3,000 yards and 15 yards

for 1,500 yards.
