SPORTING AND OTHER NOTES.

I hear it has been suggested that the Race Club should take in a stretch of ground parallel with the road along the (North) East end of the Recreation Groand so as to make a better course for the mile races. A very excellent suggestion it is, and I hope the Committee of the Kaes Club will take it upand carry it through. Nearly completed (40 | As ull race goers know, the start here for the seats in ally.

milo is all on the turn and is just about as bad u place for a starting post as could be fonud; in fact it is quite impossible † get a fair start there, and no trouble should be spared in making a change for the better. In taking in the stretch of ground referred to, no other games would be interfered with and all the Hace' Club base to do is to level a track from the dressing shed of the Football Club to join the Couro. The length of the Becreation Ground is about a furlong, and with the additional 30 yards or so from the Recreation Ground to the Cours the mile ean be got in comfortably. This will give the Club about as good at mile course as they could wish for. 12.

POLICE COURT.

Saturday, 30th August.

BEFORE MR. HAZELANIK

MCNAMARA EXTRADICTED. Inspector McNamara, who recently desoried from the police force at Singapore, was called ap before His Worship on Saturday that the latter might decide upon his extradiction to

Singapoto.

Chief Inspector Black, of the Singapore Police, was present with a warrant issued by the Singapore Police Magistrate, Mr. Groen,

His Worship after looking over the warrant, and having the prisoner identified by Inspector Black, granted the extradition under the re- fugee Act of 1881, and ordered defendant to be conveyed to Singapore to be dealt with.

THEFT OF GOLD WATCH, &C.

The Chinese saloon boy of a.s. Coptic was charged with stealing a gold watch, chain aud locket, valued at $100, from Mr. Hollier, a

passenger.

Mr. H. J. Rinder, master of the s. Coptic

being sworn, stated that the watch, chain and Lacket were missed on the 23rd April, while the ship was in Yokohama harbour. He identified the articles ne being the property of Mr. Helliog

Henry Spier, steward on the ss. Coptic testified to having found the watch in deten- daut's trunk.

P. 8. Sullivan stated that he found de fendant at 49, Queen's Road East, where his brother was said to lire. Defendant was in a room na the first floor. As witness entered he saw defendant hand to his brother the small tin box produced in Court. Witness took it and on opening it. Gund it to contain the gold chain and locket belonging to the watch found by second witness in defendant's | track.

Acensod stated that he had picked the articles

theft of two quart-bottles of olive oil, two boxes The next charge against the same man. was of toilet soup, and two tins of raisins.

The same witnesses os in the previous case were called. The steward identifying the articles stolen, saying they must have been taken daring this last trip.

Accused chained to have bought the oil in Japan, picked up the two boxes of soap, and taken the raisins to eat.

With so many walers in the Colony, would it not be possible to include a jumping competi tion in the next Gymkhana? Every one likes. He was sentenced to four months' hard to neu hareer jump; men who have a ut it all their Uses will turn round, to see a horse take fence. Many of these ponies will be found to be natural jumpers, and a pony measur ing 14.2 is quite expables of jumping nuything if it's a good one. Father O'Flynn, who won the Grand National, was only 15 hands. It would be quite feasible to put a swing gate on the exercising ring, a fight of rails, with a loose top bar, a flight of busind hunlles, and a will composed of woodan blocks could easily be put up and removed. The objection ms be raised that the ground is too hard to jump, but those | ponies come from a country where all the jump races are ran on ground like irou, and it is very seldom they ever break down. It is difficult to explain, but for some reason or other their legs and feet are far better than English horses.she Such a competition would be an excellent test for the riders, and I think would be appreciated by every one.

The Report and Accounts of the Cricket Club are out, and I think the Accounts might be made a little clearer by putting some of the Items under distinct headings and working with

columns instead of one. A few more details too might be giron in some cases, so that members may see at a glance how the money is spent, For example:

If the greater part of this sum had been saved for 10 years it would have gone a long way towards paying for a much needed new pavilion. It is all vary well- to entertain a visiting team, but to give free fortifits at the ordinary pick-up matches is placing a greater strain on the Club's resources than they can well stand--especially now when every dullar is wanted to put up a pavilion adequate to the size and requirements of the Club.

I wonder when Ping Pong" will" catch on in the Colony. The reason that it has not dous so up to date is probably due to the fact that there has been a difficulty in obtaining the game, bat. I understand that Messrs. Kelly and Walsh have sent home some time since for a consignment of boxes. I have no doubt that when once people are able to obtain the gume they will be as ping pong mad us they are or were a short time ago at home in all renks of society. It is a good game and one in which ladies can compete on aqual terms with men; it requires a keen eye and a delicate touch. Those of our friends at home who were for- tunate enough to journey to Sandown to witness the Eclipse Stakes, saw probably a finish which was unique in the annals of racing. The winner, Epsom Led, owned by Mr. Kincaid and purchased from Lord Robebery for 1,030 sover- eigns, was ridden by the South American jockey Gomez, and so fast did he travel that in the last part of the journey "he galloped out of his saddle!" and his jockey rode a baro:backed finish and won by theed, keeping his saddle on the horse's back with his right hand-e truly wonderful performance. Jockeys of the present day seem to be able to dispense with suddles altogether, and the old-time idea of sitting down to rido is quite out of date so for a flat racing is concerned:
