It was only within the last few years that Jiquid fuel had come within the province of British engineers, owing to the fact that bitherto it had only been practically chtainable in the vicinity of the Caspian Sea at such a price that rendered it commercially possible. Within the last few years, however, a consider- able change had taken place. New oil fields had been discovered, and the number of places on the eastern route at which liquid fuel could be obtained had increased to oncrmously that engineers and shipbuikters were turning their768] attention to the possibilities of that kind of fuel becoming profitable, and for shipowners to con sider whether it was not an economy to use it if not in preference to, at least in conjunction with coal on vessels trading eastward.
