Regarding the position of the Wildmans when the survivors left and their probable fate accounts differ.

William Brander, one of the surviving cabin passengers, gives the clearest account. He says that when he ran on dock he saw Wildman, with his wife and children and their nurse looking over the side into the beat manned by Dr. O'Neill, which was filling with water and could not be cleared at the time. Later he saw Captain Ward take Mrs. Wildman and the aures to the port side, sezon, the vessel, and put them into another bout. Then Brander jumped and saw no more of them.

the ship first struck, hoard Wildman in his stateroom trying to reassure his frightened family, saw the masts fall and drike the first mate's boat, which is thought to be the one in which Mrs. Wildman was trying to embark.

• What shall we do now, Captain ?`

Get out all the boats immediately, '-- I- replied, and he jumped down to the deck to direct their launching. His orders were given coolly, but with a loud voice. There was no braver man during the terrible fow minutes, that followed than Captain Ward. The other officers on the bridge left when I did, which was almost at the same time as Captain Ward. The captain was here, there, and everywhere about the decks, rousing passengers, and get- ting them out of their rooms, and harry- ing up the bouts. I went aft to the doctor's boat, on the port quarter, and found that it had just been launched, under the direction of the surgeon, Dr. O Neill. Hs and all the of. cers and arew behaved admirably.
