ANOTHER DISASTROUS PANIC

AT A JAPANESE FESTIVAL.

A disastrous incidést is reported from Osaka. The annual festival of Hirota Temple, Funade. machi, Imamiya, was celebrated on the 10th inst. An extraordinarily large number of people attended towards the evening. Some one gave a false alarma of fire at about 8.20 on seeing a smoking lamp on the road side near the temple and a general stampede followed. The same thing happened on the night of the annual festival at Kanda Templo, Tokyo, en child was trampled to the 20th alt., when

to death and two others were fatally injured, a number of others unstaining alight injuries. Happily the Osaka incident was not so serious, at the panic was so great that numbers of men zone account anys over a hundred-climbed on the roofs of the cottages by the road side in order to escape the crash, and there cried for help, dgabliess thereby adding to the confusion of the needlessly terrorised crowd. At the risk of their lives the policemon endeavoured to stop the mind rush of people toward the temple, Int their efforts wore almost in vain. Hundreds of pairs of gets wore picked up at the scene of the accident afterwards, besides a large quantity of hats, shawls and beori. Seren" medical men were sent for to attend to the injured.

THE U. S. S. OLYMPIA."

The U.S.5. Olympia will be out of the hands of the dockyard repairers by June next, and will thon rejoin the China Squadron. Her figurehead, it is stated, will be the handsomest of any in the service, It is a reproduction of the classic statue "The Winged Victory," cast in bronze. The Cruiser bore no figurehead in the Manila bay fight. She had on har bow simply the national shield in red, white and blue, with gilded scroll work, a device on all vessels of recent construction. According to specifications and preliminary models prepared by Naval Constructor Baxter, the new figure head and scroll work will contain about 3,000 pounds of bronze, and will be a lasting, appro prints memorial of the Olympia's war service. The figurehend, from the pedestal of dolphins to the eagle's head, will treasure about seven foot. Scroll work containing the national cost of arms on either side will run aft and under Death the hawae pipes, about twelve feat. För stern ornament Constuctor Baxter has chosen this design: An open space in a scroll frame at shield with an eagle pereked upon it, and on either aide, running forward about six Zoet to the six-pounder, sponsons, scroll work dolphins and figures emblematic of war.

He holds that the Legation gards should be limited to a small number, and that Art. 11 shall operate on the understanding that the integrity of China is netthreatened and that the natives means of living are not interfered with.
