Colonies, Russis, and the United States. The ten consumed in the United Kingdom during 1899 amounted to about 244,000,000lbs. of which as much as 231,000,000lbs. was British grown.
In 1899 the orop from Ceylon was the heaviest on record. About 17,000,000 lbs of this tea was consumed in Russia last year and as the consumption is increasing yearly, there is no fear that the ter now grown on the south-east coast of the black Cancasino Bea will oust it from the Russian market. India now ships nearly nine-tenths of her tea exports to the United Kingdom, but of course some of this tes is re-exported to the other evuutrivs.
Japanese teas mostly go to the United States and Cannds, only about a twenty-fifth part be. world. Mr. Stephen Hallett, writing in the Pall Mall Gazette, gives some interesting garos about Chinese emigration all the world over, from which we take the following:-

For many years post the tide of Chinese im- migration bus been pouring into Malaysia, and overflowing into all the adjacent islands. Oat of a population of 180.000 in Singapore, for example, there number 110,000 Chinese while the latest statistion show that in sad around the Siraits Settlements there are fally a million Chinese, not including tho in Borneo, the Dutch culonias or the Philippines.
