justice to the friendly promptitude of Captain Steen Bitte of the Danish Trigate Galatea, who, happening to be at: Whampoa, armed his boats and proceeded with them immediately
to Canton with a cordial offer of his services and protection :

I have felt the want very much
on the present occasion of a small Government Steamer, those belonging to the East India Company which have hitherto been employed in China, being appropriated to naval purposes and not always at the command of the Civil Government, and I deem it of very great importânce, especially on occasions like the present; that the Governor of this Colony should have the means ( of safe and immediate conimunication at his own disposal, with the Consul at Canton whose despatches
on the late occasion
from the want
of a Steamer did not reach me till
four days after the disturbance took
place.
