this Work stands onzivalled. All the new words For comprehensiveness and practical service which the Chinese have of late years been com- pelled to coin to expread the numerous objects in. machinery, photography, telegraphy, and in science generally, which the rapid advance ef relations no imposed upon them, are foreign here given in calento. Each and every word in fully illustrated and explained, forming exercises for students of a most instructive nature. Both the Court and Punti pronunciations are given, the nccents being carefully marked on the best ********principle hitherto attained. The typography displays the success of an attempt to make the Chiasm and English type correspond in the size of hedy, thereby affecting a vast economy of space, achieving a clearuess not previously altaine, and dispensing with those rast margins and vacant spaces which have heretofore clarac terized Chinese publications.

To illustrate the vast scope of the work the

following facts areeabinitted for consideration Chalmers Vocabulary contains about 16,000 Chinese characters, and Mudharst's English and Chinese Dictionary about 100,000 whilst this work contains more then 50,000 English words, and upwards of 600,000, Chinese characters, Again, despite all the grammars and other elementary works as yet published, the student of this difficult language absolutely requires os- amples to display the various applications att equivalents of different words which have one Jeneral meaning. Of those examples this work contains mers than five times as many as any other Dictionary hitherto published:

For pinetical purposes the arrangement of the work is so complete that a reference to its pages cuables a person who understands English to communicate eferfictly with natives who wider stand nothing but Chinese. In this respect the work will be found indispensable to all Europeans residing in China, and to the natives themselves it explains subjects fully with which very few of them are perfectly acquainted. To porties resident in England and interested in Cling it cannot but he invaluable occasionally.

It comprises upwards of two thongand, largo sof quarto pages
