ADULTERATION OF TEA.
(To the Editor of the "Time") Sir-In the mgthy, correpondenca which has been published in The Times relating to the auppression of the adulteration of tra, none of the writers oppoùr to have been aware that ther is machinery already in existence by means of which the required object could be stained with little trouble, and as an almost nominal cost. I allude to the Government Laboratory at Bomerset Houso, where there is an efficient staf of chemists' specially trained in to detention of adalteration, and where thovenoda of samples are yolirly examined, not only for the two great Departments of Inland Revenus and Custome, but also for almost all other Departmenta of the State
It is true, as stated in your columne, that Exoise officers have the power of acizing adul- terated tea offered for sale, but this power t never exerrised in auges where the adulterated tea is in the state in which it has paid the duty, and it would obviously be just to do so while the Customs knowingly allow it to pass into consumption: The case of tobacco afforda » striking illustration that so long as the present course is followed it will not be possible to ampares the trade io adalterated for. Prior to 1383, the Custom accepted to duty open all imported Cavendish, tobacco, whether genuine or not, and although, ne in the case of tos, the Excies Department had the power of seizing all that wair, offered for sale in an adulterated aute it was found impossible to check the trufio in Illicit Carendiat, whether sowuggled or of bows manufacture, until a change in the law was made in the above mentioned your. The weight of tabaco -imported-exovata" 45,000,000th annually, yet it is rare that a osor occurs where leaf tobacco is imported in an adulteruted state, or where
the regulations are violated with sogard to
mungfastured tobacco. In onses of suspicion, samples are sent to the Laboratory at Somers Horse; but stibuld isolátod Instances ossar of adulterated leaf tobacco phasing out of the bonded warehouses, or of manufactured tobacco being smuggled or insported contrary to the regulations, the officers of Excise are in a position to seize it wherever.it may be offered for sale,UNG

Ro or Tichborne bad sailed for New York from Ria in the Bello, expecting money at New York, anxious to hear from his friends, deäiruns that his ma should be put down at the Travellers' Club, aware that he had 21.000 a year in bis own right, and was heir to £16 000 a year reippaarest slaughteraan de Wagga Wagga, an ex-associate of thieves and nahrangere, mettably pressed for some two hundred pounds, and forgetful of all that Boger Takborne ever kues. These were facts which the jury would
have to take into account,
