THE SCIENCE OF SPIRITUALISM, Two lectures ‚oà The Phenomenal and Scientific Aspects of Spiritualism" have been delivered in the Opere Theatre at the Crystal Palace by Dr. George Sexton, MA., M.D., LL.D. M. Benjamin Coleman, of Upper Norwood, presided. In the first lecture D. Sexton divided the phonomena of epiritualism into are sections, panely 1-Movements of ponderulo objecte and rapping moisse. 2-In- telligent answers to questions, 3. Psychological phenomers of the nature of trance and clair- voyance, in which the organism of the sensitive or medium is more impediutoly acted upon. 4. Direat action of spirits, as-is spirit votoes and direct spirit writing. 5-The appearance of spirits to raazy persuusn the eame time. The lecturer reviewed the objections of Dr. Carpen- ter and others to spiritalien, and said that they were utterly incompetent to explain the great majority of the manifestations; he pino stated that the spiritual theory alone met all the facte. At the lecture Dr. Sexton gave further information About spiritcal phenomena, and expounded the view of Biabop Berkeley and other philosophers as to the ma- ture of matter and epirit. Buth lestures were largely attended, and at the close of euch; several- questionn vera put by several gentlemen pro- sent One inquirer wished to know what good spiritualism had done to the world, and be ask-. ed whether the spirits had ever done anything) useful, suoù a revealing the names of great wurderers or great forgers. Pr. Sexton replied that crimes bad often been revealed by spirit agency, but that if spírita, sa s general role, ré- turned to earth to act as policemen, or to teach people how to gob mouey, he should hold them in contempt. Their chief mission was to de- monstrate to man in this matérialistic age the reality of a life beyond the grave, and to teasb rach wy to live here that they may be bappy hereafter. It also, be said, proved that the loved ones gone before are not altogether ont off from communicating with their friends, and it robe death of nearly all its terrors.
