Examination contioned: My profit on the purchase in London, and the price at wbieb I Sell to the Home, is all I get from the liquors, My profit is I sage about $60 a month, but I buvo never calculated it. The price at which I supply to the Elome is the sume na the afore. terpers' price, in some things lower. I have never given preference to any man över utt. other. I have neverebipped a man before others because he had no cash to bay beer. Afar as I can judge, the men are shipped in dus rota. tion, or nye offered to captains in rotation. Men who have spent all their money are kept there antil they get a resoopable offerto, abip, and if they will not ship, they are turned out. If they are in debt the lose fals on the Home. In 1871 the lag from this case was between $6,000 and $7,000. I do not say they all refused to ship: A to runners, they are their food at the Ingie, and the Home pays them a dollar a head (ultimately paid by the seaman) for every in shipped. That was the practice when I want to the Hos. Seamen from the Eoine are taken by the beat class of ships. The retorn produced of scamen entered and shipped in the Boman is a currect copy of one that I made,
Thy Attorney-General then put in a letter from Messrs. Caldwelt and Bereton to Mr. Bell, asking for a complete retestation of and apo logy for the charges and insinuations muda in the artile and letter complained of; and the reply of Mr. Bell asking for a specific atate- ment of the matters complained of, and offer fùg to explain any error that might have been committel, when so pointed out.
