servant girl is brutally murdered, and when a young man who has been put on his trial for the grine is acquitted by the jury the verdict is received with a burst of cheering both in the court and in the street beyond. If the scene of the murder had boon Ireland, and the victim had bear a landlord or a bailiff, this behaviour would have been perfectly intelligible. It would bare meant that the opinion of the public was vory much in favour of landlords being alot, and very strongly opposed to any one's being barged for shooting shem. It would be wrong, however, to sonclude that the crowd which listened to the trisl of Edmund Pook, or waited anlaide to her the result, oberieled any special spite against nervant girls, or any special wish to screen their murderers from punishwant. The spectators siply thought that the getting up of the caus showed marks of prejudico,against the prisonor on the part of the police and thereupon they ranged themselves on his side us being the weak er aida of the two. It occurred to none of them probably that the inability of the Crown to establish Edmund Pook's guilt did not alter the fucts that a woman had been murdered, and that the murderer has up to this time secaped seat free. It is of the utmost importance that an innocent man should not be wrongly convict ed, but it is of some importance also that men
