The Second Empire -looked solely to the material amelioration of the working classes, and did nothing for public instruation, whiob in auch a source of atrenght to Germany. •EXTRACTING A LION'S TOOTH. The Glasgow Herald relates a story of the extraction of a lion's booth in a monagerie in that city. The Hen having been necured with ropes, the doctor mounted on a tub in front of tha cage, and immediately sot to work. 4 piece of wood was placed to the lion's mouth, and at once the beast mude a soap. A terrible straggle onaned, but ultimately the doctor triumphed. By means of powerfal forces ho extracted the loose tooth, which was found broken and diesaved.near the root. When the task had been completed the lion sank down completely exhausted, and while he lay steady and quiet the doctor out the fleah over the jaw, and found the bone severely injured, if not broken. It was, however, deemed inexpedient to subject the basst to another operation, and the excisiva of the injured bone has accordingly been poet- poned until 'is is seen whether it ecossions any sarione inconvenience. Altogether, including the hour during which the animal was bound before the doctor set to work, the "operation lasted about an hour and a half.
