In the course of my conversation yesterday with the Minister for Foreign Affairs, he adverted to the absurd paragraphs which have lately appeared in some of the newspapers importing to France the design of obtaining from the Chinese Government the cession of the Island of Chusan. He declared that the French Government not only had never entertained any such project, but that they would not accept of the Island of Chusan were it to be offered to them voluntarily by the Emperor of China.
It is, however, certain that M. de Lagrenée has instructions to seek for a "Pied à terre" in the China seas, at a convenient distance...
