A comparison between the years 1895-1896 shows a decrease of 172 British chips, but an Increase of 148,657 British tons. The decrease is mainly due to the river steamer Wing Tong (in whlobference was made in the 1895 report which hade this year only 12 entries and 11 departures, agost 114 round trips in 1895. Exclusive of all rivor steamers the return would show an increase of British ships and 120,788 British tons
Anather canse of apparent decrease in British slips compared with 1895 will be found in the number of Chinese owned vessels which appeared i 1805 ander the British dog and which have. since returned to their own, and appeared in 1896 as Chinose; the number of their entries addlemanes. In 1895 were 112, with a tonnage of 165,774 tone. If those ware also excited from the comparison, we woul geð an ingrange 6 142 British ships and 286,557 British tons, or 3. par cent.
A huge inorense in foreign ships and tonnago is shown in the above comparative statemen This increase is found principally under the German, Japanese, and Chinate flaga.
The record for the German flag in 1896 is represented by an increase of 175 ships satering. and aleming with a tonnaga of 233,156 tone. A sill larger inercase is shown if the Chinese anips which sailed under the German fog in 185 were taken out of the comparison. These amounted to 92 satries and clearances of 07,914 tons, and the actual increase under the Germon fag would then besome 267 ships entering and dearing with a tonnage of 891,570.
This substantial inormse is built up by an increased number of opties and clearances in the coasting-trade, coupled with the now. Riskmara no from Europe, and the large new steatoaze of D, D. R. lino which came to Hongkong during the year under review.
We find that the total import tesis, of 186 was represented by 34,526 vela aggrogating 8,051,885 tons carrying 6,198,303 tons of cargo, of which 3,293,503 tous wore discharged in Hongkong.
