On the Sai-wan Road, the work has been chiefly executed by day work, excepting the bridges which are let by Contract, and some portions, where the work was more expensive and at the same time better calculated for let by small Contracts or "piece work jobs" at lumpsum prices.
The proportion out of the first Estimate for $15,000 that was carried out on this system, was as follows.

A direct comparison of the cost with the length of Road executed, would lead to an inaccurate result.
An approximate comparison of the cost of the Contract Work and of that by day work may be obtained by referring to the ultimate wages paid under Contract, as compared with the ordinary rate for day work;

On the torkur poo Sea Wall Alvong Contractor employed 3414/labourers and received for 345 ft run of wall @ 28 c/ft: $690 524 @ 1.75 = 917
