THE OTHER ame,
But there is nother sîk to, pietures such as these. If someone wins a big betting stake thou meone muet lose one, and the feelings of the bookmaker who always pays upon the rail cannot be very enviable ones as he soon a hores some stiling home lengths in front of every thing, which means the loss of many of thos crisp bits of paper and bandfuls of golden coins. Justas all of a have had hur good times. 87, 1 suppose wo have goze through periods of Lapens, disappointment, and danger. Skin ming over a fer of the incidents that chill one's blood, it is quin likely that my uneasy moments have bean commonplace compared to those of thousands who love travelled o'or life's salomo monin. Soma clay readers may remember an experience. I detailed when at the very top of the Antwerp Cathedral spire. Of late years that stands out at the particular incident when the blood seemed to go told in one's borly. After a long dizb a party cf four had reashed the topmoet available, point of the Cathedral spira; the mind was blowing a gale up there, alboit it is the middle of a blasing day fá Angust. Cutebing the handrail in our weary Lg jamt up sane hundreds of staps we all at urce came from niter darktes into the broad. beautifal light of day. Hut in hand I leant forward to leak oror the parapet from this giddy height, and steadying myself by clutching friendly red, it came out of its corner, and inst for our brief atom of times I thought I' wazito ha hard into the streets below. This Fred red had evidostly been placed in the recess for the purpose of assisting in the hoisting and furling of the 3ng, and ca the instant I had thought the support hod given way. That was one of my thrilling moments. As boy it was my unlucky fate to: go through the ice whilst sliding with a com- panion, and although a bit of a swimmer, the Benuation of fouling the Lup of one's houd bamp against the ice after a deathly cold planga into the water has not hesa entirely forgotten, Although it is many, many years ago. Bathing at Barmouth case, I was entily, lured out to sea on haigh..summer's morning by an Isle of Wight friend-bo swam like a fish-who ext through the saw in prent style. The sensutlen was simply delightful to find ourself Lealize gally over the naves. Bat upon my yopmain equiring low fresh I folt, I turned to sen have far we had swu out, and the houses on the. mountain slees of the little town op peared about the size of logs. Novar Fresh or not Aball 1-forgel that moment. before landing zoond, I 'grow dead tired on the fatit. and dared not tell my companion for fear of nie. Come back Tas all I could shout, and turoing my face shorowards stute that wenry swim with strange faelings. That one glance torurde hart thrilled mo na I never wish to ba thrilled again. Those who have barbad at Barmouth may know how sloping the ads are; the tide going nut for alt-a-mile or noté In places. With an occa- tional rest by swimming on the back we both reached the shore all right, but when I found ny font touch the end for the first time there was a feeling came evor sie that a feeble pan such as mine camot descrite. Whether or not my cocrags in uter has entirely sure we I do not know; but ever since that day I bare takan my ass bathing with a circumspection worthy of & Ettish matron. Some day. I may retara to a few moce of my seaside adventures, for they are by no means exhausted.. But this chapter is already too porconal to satisly we alto- gether, and has I must stay my hand.
"HOW'S THAT?"
When Mr. Harry Farniss aevered bia con nestion with Mr. Pinch's" happy family he left a blank in the pages not easily filled up. Somelor or other his Liks Joko" failed to hit the Ackle taste of the public; and we soon had to mourn its departure. Now, hereses, we ind that he has been paying some attention ta nur glorious summer game, and in a sorics of pao hundrelaketolos lo hos given the worid ne vivid and as humansous picture of “W. (}," on the avidset field as can possibly by imagined. The champion is depicted as wearing one of these broad trimráð, soft, white hats, said in every one of the pictures a pose of our grant cricketer is it off to the life. To see the rapidly kimmed skotch-merely a few boda-of "W. G." thantering "No, no," ne he refuses to badge an inok, the warning paim of the arm, the sofa reach of the bat over the crease, in to -enjoy a moment of Grace in all its axhilaration.
THE CHAMPAGNE TRADE. Mr. Charle Eloidvicek sonde tous (74olar) from Reits the following notes on the champagne vintages-Vintage, 1889. The winen. which comunaded prices at the vintage not known befors, bave kapt their promise as to tho development of the quality, and, now that the 180 Acre, are certainly the wines to drink. Thou wings possess daliessy and body. and therefore suit the English market. The 1888 vintaga Leing good, was principally ro tervet for England; the-riutagus of 1890 and 1891 wers of a lighter style, and have been disposed of in other countries. Vintage, 1892 -The characteristic of this vintago is that, with the exception of 1888, which produced Ught and acid win, it has been the smallest we have had in the campagne district since 1880. A cordingly, the pricas paid for the grapes were very high in the latter vintage, and the result has been thus the fine wines and cuvées of 1892 are paly found in limited quantities. The 3802 are showing banquet, delicacy, and body, and the development of the wines shows that they have fully answered the expectations which were sntertained from the first as to their quality Vintage, 1813-After the scarceness of good wines in presions years, this vintage came as a relief to the chupagno'trade, ns both regards quantity and quality, being nearly four thous larger than that of 1992. The grapes, were gathared during a hot and favourablo tempora ture, and, oving to the fine weather, the wildrow was quite absent from the vineyards. For these reasons 1893 is an excellent vintage, and the
