"I attribute och of the delay in fully under standing this North Pacifa question to the 150 of the old maps and, the absence of this gnomonic projection, for we cannot doubt, with the latter constantly before men's eyes and in their minds, that our commercial leaders would have long ago, roogaired that upon the ocean rontes between San Francisco and Yokohams, Puget Sound and Hakodadi, the Aleutian Islands offer a fareumble broak in these long lines, and that ecal porta at Onalaska and other points in that chain of islands would bring the question of the coal supply within the bernds of proftable cargo carrying confining the voyages to die, tances of about 2,000 miles. We ete, moreover, assured of good ports in the Aleutian Islands, and that the fading banke discovered by the Fish Commission steamer Alkarnain this vicinity will rank among the most modefive in the world, forming a basis. Ter a fish ouring industry, and providing return cargoes for the collices that visit these islands. I have re presented upon this chart the principal lines of tatare commerce. Thay indicate the probable routes to be followed as the rich countries of Northern Asia are developer."
The completion of the Nloscana Canal Tästead of leaving this propered northern rents cat in the cold, would, according to Captain Taylor, really help it. You will perceive, in the fature, lines of freight steamers from New York and New Orleans passing through the canal and touubing at Aospalos, Mazatiau, Fan Diego, San Francisco, Puget Bad, Canalska, Petropaulovsky, Hakoladi, Takchams, sad thes adding advantages of coal trade between the Taxicus points of the routes to the interchange of commodities from the extremes of the line, while reaping the advantage of small coal supply and large cargo space by this division of the ronte into numerous spil volume,"

THE METRIC SYSTEM. We (Zines) pablished recently fourth and Anal letter from a correspondent on the Metric System, its alleged merite, and its defects, Its praiads are in many months. Men of science all over the world have gradually adopted it for their own purposes, and have found their convenience in so doing, Practi- cal men have declared for it, and its adop tion has scoolingly been arged by chambers of compres. But one these, our correspondent asked, the persona who are most entitled to be heard? Are their wants the same as those of other and more numerous okasos of the com- munity Men of science use the metric system for processes of measurement, not for processer of exchange. Whether it does ex does not admit of on easy division of volumes into their aliquot parts is to them a matter of indifference. Thers can be no good reason, therafers, for accepting Their judgment as conclusive on the intense advantage which pro to follow from the udoption of the metric system by those who are engaged in trade. But our corespondent still to rockon with another and a very different class-with that of mercantile me. So many other countries have, as he bus ahorn in former letters, adopted the matric system that our refusal to adopt it is mid to put us at a disadvantage in our dealings with the oatente world. We stand practically alone, and it is, natural, it is. urged,. that foreign customers should prefer to do busi- ness with countries whose weights and measure- morts are the same as their own. This argu- "ment our correspondent put aside an so flimsy as hardly to be worth disenesing. French and Gorman aerobanta can manage to and us goods. marked or invoiced in English measures. Eng- lish merchants and mainƐacturers can surely manage to fall in with foreign requirements. It needs only a table giving in paralel cotumas the equivalente of quantities according to the two methods of measurement, and the thing can be done with no very severe montal strain, But there are other reasons why the opinion of mercantile man is not to be ken as conclusive on this matter. They, like men of science, have special needs of their own, and, whatever their opinion may be worth as te thus, it is of no value at all as to the requirements of the retail Mercantile mon trailer, and of his customers. deal with goods in bulk, but it in the easy diviHE MERCANTILE BANK OF INDIA,
sibility of goods into small clique parts which in most essential for setail buying and selling, and the metric system, as our correspondent has abundantly shown, does not lend itself to this. It appears, then, that the introduction of the metrie system is called for by two classes-by ea of scienos, who can use it already for their own purposes, and who wrongly assume that it would be a beneficial for all purposes-an-for theirs, and by wholesale traders, who can get na very well without it, while it is clearly to the disadvantage of the ono olass whom it would most closely touch and who have the ebief clain to be considered. ·
Our correspondent ha epakcon for thows who bare no great power to make their own voices heard at least, in such discussions as these. But they are numerous class; and they are engaged daily in transactions which far exceed in umber those of the advocates of the restric system. They need coins and quantities which admit of enay division into haires and quarters, and thirds, and these they have already and are perfectly well satisfied with them. If they are. var deprived of them it will not be by their own wish or in response to any demand of theirs. The change will be forend upon them, as it has been forced alreedy upon their follows elsewhere, and they will be driven, as these have been, to the same expedients to free themselves from the inconvenience which it outails. It was in France that the metric system came first into ocxpulsory use, but though more tha Centary has passed cizce it was established, it has not aron got displaced the der system of calculation, French shopkespers still reckon by the half-kilo and not by ita motrical equiva lent, and make the subdivision of the frane not ..correspondent has shown, havs the advocates of the rastric system the fall courage of their opinions. They do not propose to touch the calendar with its duodecimal division of months.: There are still to be twenty-four hours in the day, The compass is still to be boxed by Dontiunod process of holving til 1/32 has been arrived at. Thera tre still to be the four cardinal points, for nature will give no help here, but is on the side of the ordizary man who goes on obstinately ecanting by hsives and quarters, and who in all probability will contiune ao to do as long as the world laste. The poor fellow has bisern convenience in view, and he adopts the method which he finds best for this without much regard to any requiremente hat his own. It is only under compulsion that he will bo indoood to change his ways, and since he has a rast majority of the a way of thinking as himself, it may, parluste, be less easy to apply Doarpalsich to him than metrical experts fancy. Fines and-forfeiture of goods might bring him to another mind, but those who have proposed these draatio methods of refcem must begin with stiller promoure and must convines their intended victim that they hare his ren! good at heart, and that they are not faddisio

It is true, of coures, as M. Lo Claro points R. M. Grry, Esq. k out in a letter from which we print sonis extracts, that the decimal and the matrie system ara indsportont of one another. This they are in theory, but it is a decimal metris system which is put forward for our imitation, and no pro- posals have been made for the adoption of any other. Indeed, one oklootlon. which our corre spondont has urged against the metric syster is that it adoption wanld prevent or would inde- finitely retard the introduction into common uspor of a duodecimal system of notation.
