THE COURT OF INQUIRY.

A Court of Inquiry was held at Singapore on the 18th my 14th March as to the loss of the steamer Sponditus, of Landon, which went sshore on the 6th inet on Cape Varells. Mr. J. O. Anthonisz was President, with Lavit. I. J. D. Laston, R.N., Captain Harmer, noting deputy Muster Attendant, and Captain Ilong toa, K.N.I., of the steamer Qkhki, we asessors. From the evidence given it appeared that the vessel left Hongkong on the 4th inst., bunad for Singapore, Hamburg, and London with general urgo All wout well until half-post two on the morning of the 6th, when she strack, and the captain, awakened by the order barda-star-boord, went on the bridge to find his ship on rocks lying at the foot of cliffs between three and four hundred feet in height. The captain and all his officers agreed in their oleervations trade on the previous day, and Captain Edwards stoored a course which he expected would enable him to puss the Cops at a distance of twenty-two miles. He told the Court bo was never more surprised in his life when he found ho was aground, and he could aot account for it. The second offloor, Edward Bobofor, was on watch at the time, and the captain averred that officer did not call him (the captain) when land was sighted. Schafer, howover, said be straped on the floor with his foot. He dd not blow the whistle connecting the bridge with the chart room as he had no time.

Soliator's story was that ha only saw land two minutes before the vessel The land was entirely covered with struck. inze, which lifted just after the vessel struck. In connection will this the captain said that when he came on deck it was possible to Schafer swor ses three or four miles, that he was not aloep and was not short sighted. He had a mate'e sertiffento dated 1889, but he lost it in the wrack. Fiduey McDonnell, the third fear; stated that Schafer was sobok when he relieved Schafer ut midnight, and chief oficer L... E Saspo testified to the captain's sobriety and stealindes. As to the weather, MeDonnell said it we showery and occasionally misty up till eleven o'clock, but afterwards cleared an. There was hardly any current ex- countered, it was stated, from midday on the 5th. The book-out mah, Ismail Ben Abdul Rahmaz, said the night was slightly rainy and dark, and nothing could be seen. He did not ses laid, but he saw brokers about 150 yards frome vasel, just before she struck. He called out to send the ship to port (kiri), but no one answered. Schafer, in reply to tho Court, sald he did not know the meaning of the word kiri. The Court retired to care:der the fading. ratorning after the lapse of an hour and a quarter.
