THE COLLIERY EXPLOSION. IN WALES,
Chrdiff (Wales), 27th January, The maidents of the town and vianity of Tylorstown, near horo, were terrified by terzifo reverberations to-day, which shook the whole town. It was ascertained in a short tone that the concussion was censed by an explosion in neighbouring calliery, with disastrone quences to life and property: The latest ropart places the number of dead at afty-four, though it is feared the farther exploration of the wrecked mine will develop the bodies of mors.
Reports of the unmber of killed have bash coulioting, and there is doubt as to the number of men in the mine at the time of the catar trophe. The first reporta gave the number in the shaft at fifty-four, but some of the men 05/ caped to the surface bringing the body of omɑ comrade with them. The missing population of the locality knew all too quickly what the muffled, thartercus rumble of the explosion meant, and rushed to the mouth of the pit, only to have their worst fears confirmed.
The shaft was found to be entirely abutteral and it was evident that there was little hope that any of those in the pit would bare survived the explosion. The despair of the women whe flooked about the math of the pit was little more terrible than the horrible anxiety of those who hoped to find that those who were missing from their sides bad by sus chance not entered the mins.
..
The pit was found to have caught fire and the hindrance that this caused to the work of Tesove added to the excitement and tension of feeling. It was only through bearing the amoat peril that the living were able to pro- secute their quest for the dead The number of the dead grow from twelve to fifteen and then to twenty, and the list of those known to have been in the fated shaft kept constantly
An extraordinary scene was witnessed at Trafalgas Bquare this morning. This was the anniversary of the execution v Charles I, af England, who was babouded by order of a spool High Court of Justicas appointed by the Commas, Jan. 30th, 1849. This morning many small parties of so called Legitimists arrisød in Trafalgar Square with doral wreaths bearing divera usoriptions. These offerings they attempted to place at the foot of the status of Charles I: The first of tim "Legitimists to appear arrived at 3 o'clock this morning and they increased in number as the day wore on, The police, however, compelled thom to re- move the wreaths as such a demonstration was contrary to law. The crowd, which at one time was very large, obeyed and then, with no covered heads, repeated the collect referring to the so-called "martyr sovereign. Then the "Legitivists" nered up prayers for the dead King, but when the demonstration began to attract too much attention it was dispersed by the polim ring the morning, hawe other admirers of King Charks came singly to the statue in Trafalgar Square and apparently by crders received from the Chief of Police, at Scotland Yard, a number of beautiful wreaths and flowers, inscribed, "In memory of the White King," we allowed to be placed at the foot of the pedestal, and to remain there during the early part of the day.
