Then the police searched the house, and de covered the apparition hiding, in most tunghostly style, in a Faoant, mom. He was promptly arrested, and this morning it was decided to charge him with agroney. He is a native of Baggie, and his object saims to have been to frighten the Japanese tenants out of the build ing-Straits Times.

"Papers were set in all the subjects offered axcap reading, conversation, and the papil teachers practical work, which wore takon orally. Great care was taken to preserve," as far as possible, the standard hitherto adoptod in the manual examinations, the questions being carefully chosen to test the knowledg which had been impurted to the boys in the portions of their subjects which they had boos taught. Only in three instances was it pointed out by the Head Master that we had exceeded) this limit, and then das allowance was made in. the awewling af marks. The papers were generally slightly longer than mal, in order to give a much soon as possible; and it hoped that the tabulated results on the mark sheets may afford, some ones of comparison between the work in this examination and that of last year. We have, however, in order ta arod too severo a test, taken, 40 per cent, in- stead of 50 per cent, far the minimum of marka nemary to obtain a "pass." It was then possible for any boy doing a little suli, le pass.

In reporting upon the work of 566 boys it. is impossible, without being inconveniently lengthy, to give more than a gaberal of the exataiere opinion of the work done. To do this would novesitate a detailed report apor each class, or set of parallel divisions, and as this count be done we would draw attention to the mark sheets, which have been prepared to show not only the order of merit in each division. but also the percentage of marks, obtained in each subject by cach boy, and the percentage of paeros in each subject in each division; as wall as the actaal number of passes and failures awarded to cash bay.

With regard to the actual work, as tight." ha expected in a school of this kind and sizu, where some buys have been so long and some so short a time nasler tuition, the work showed great unogennes. But what is less easily ac- constable is the fact that the boys in one class, not bxcepting the First, showed great disparity. of knowledge or of power to reprodues it. There were a good many cases of conspicuoUS auccess, but there was also a lamentable amount of weak and inseparate work. The best subjects were writing, algebra, and bookkeeping, and the worst conversation, composition, Latin, Enclid

#

Winally, while we recognise in the work of individual boys evidence of sound and careful teaching, the general efficiency of the work. appeared to ne to be squall. We think that boys are pushed on too rapidly, and we feel sure that more attention should be given to the teaching and the study of English We bollers that musk goot might be effected; and ibe standard of eoienoy raised, if the ability and energy of the Enropean staff were directed more to the Camrose boys. And we are not confident that it is for the welfare of the School, or in the interests of the adacution of the Chinese, that the non-Chinese boys should be ir separate classes, and consequoally the whols timo of two Earopeta mastars given ontirely

to them.

We are pleased to be able to report very favourably on the discipling of the School and

the general orderly, bekasiour of the boys. Lastly, our thanks are due to the Head Muster And the Assistant Master for their ready do.operation with us in all matters where we neoded their assistance."
