For some weeks past the mpply of silver in Nauking I been largely increased by the introduction of the Vicurvy's new coins from Hankow. The delaw is a very neat place and deserves to replace the rade Mexican. One result of the new coinage has been to put the itou-cent and twenty-cent pieces of Japan, Hoag- kong, and the Straits at a discount, and the price of a dollar in ensh has fallen to 350, the lowest in eight or ten years.

Shanghai, 16th December. It is reported on what we believo ta be good authority that Germán as well as Russian ships have been surreying Kinnchen Bay, the sutrance to which is in about lat. 36 deg., to the south of the Shantung Promontory, and studying its expabilities as a unvel station. It is a magni- ficent barbour with a difficult entrance, and some 10 fathoms of water. The Chinese had intended before the war to fortify it, and there was ailitary telegraph line between it and Weihaiwai. It is farther stated that this bay will be the head- quarters of the Russian squadron this winter. The Japanes have done everything in their power to render Port Arthur uncloss, and there was no idea of the Russian squadron wintering there.

It is doubtless in connection with this that the Ministry of War has telegraphed to the Vicarey at Nanking to send four of the best ships of the Nanyang squadron to winter at Chefoo, whore they will probably be joined by the new torpedo- best outshers, the Folting and Paiging. The foar vessels selected for this purgess see the Huantai 1,500 tons, Captais Wa Ko-wei, Nan sheng, 2,200 tons Captain Li Tien, Koichi, 2,480 tons, Captain Wu Cl'ichso (the last two officers being graduates of the Foochow Naral School), and Nanshui, 2,200 tons, Captain Yuan Chia tácN.
