Governor dines the attention of the

of Executive Council to a Despatch which he had received from Mr Consul, Macgregor at Canton, and already enclosed to Lord Aberdeen with his own observations, shewing the hardship of paying the Salaries

of Public Servants at Canton in Mexican Dollars, which, although equal or superior to Spanish Dollars in intrinsic value and bearing a premium at the Northern Ports, are at a discount in the South of China.

Considering that the Civil Servants here are now paid at the rate of "1½", which is above the intrinsic value

of

Spanish and Mexican dollars as broadly represented to H.M. Government, and
