The sum now remitted would have been forwarded at the close of the Quarters ending 31st October, 1843 and 31 January 1844, could it have been done without loss to the Indian Post Office, but the Exchange for Mexican and other Republican Dollars which were received here at the rate of 225 $225 Currency per 100 dollars, did not exceed 218 @ 220 per 100 dollars, and it was not till very lately that arrangements have been made between Her Majesty's Plenipotentiary in China and the Government of India, to grant Bills for Public money at par.

I am directed by His Excellency the Governor in Council to transmit to you the Enclosed bill No: 179 drawn by Her Majesty's Plenipotentiary in China upon the Government of India for CPR 138. 2 One Hundred and thirty eight Rupees two annas being the amount of Postage collected in China on letters received from, and forwarded to Calcutta from 1 August, 1843, to 31 January, 1844 as per accompanying statement by No. Spring in charge of the Post Office at this place.
