I have also the honor to forward
the
opinion of Mr. Burgass, the Legal Adviser to Government, on the case, in accordance with which His Excellency would wish you not to release the Lascar from prison until the Deodand of Five Dollars suggested by Mr. Burgass has been levied upon the musket.
His Excellency would further wish you to write to Messrs Jardine Matheson & Co. and forward them a Copy of the Proceedings together with one of Mr. Burgass' opinion and at the same time caution them as to the necessity of giving strict orders to their Watchmen to be most careful when discharging fire-arms to point them in such a direction as shall not endanger the safety of the inhabitants of the neighbourhood.
