Your Lordship respectively,
and to
the 3rd and 14 of this month; and to those extracts I will only add
my
solemn
and unprejudiced opinion, that whatever
be the result of the War in which
we are engaged with the Chinese Government,
and whatever may
be hereafter decided
upon with respect to other insular
positions, this Settlement has already
advanced too far to admit
even of
its being
restored to the Authority
of the Emperor, consistently
with the
Honor and Advantage of Her Majesty's Crown and Subjects.
