Agaki is a very old town; with a fine esstle, which is roll in tow, towerlag, orer the walls, from the train. Within the last ten miles, the train- pases through a most beautiful cutting up a 1 in 40 gradient and runs through a prsity valley with high hills on either side. The sight of the maples here in November is somthing vary lovity. From Nagahaus the boat starte at a little before 10 am and reaches. Otan, the other side of the lake, in about three hours and a balf. Though time will be saved by going round the lake (about fifty miles) when the line | is opened in July. I question mach whether the lake journey by water will not be missed, as al-Luzon Sugat though the bouls are small and sae's freedom of action exceedingly fruited, yet the break in the monotony of the train journey affords a very pleasant relief and the lake scenery on a flue Jay cannot be surpassed. The railway from Nagoya to Nagahataa has been opened some consider able time, and is probably well known to freig ners. From Otsi. through Kioto and Onaka to Kuba has been opened still longer, and has been so frequently used by foreigners past and pre eat that no mention need je nada bere of that part of the journey, Tose op, the the iskon from Yokohama to Nagoya (about 178 miles) is about U hours, Nagoya to Nagahams 21 Kourt, oross- ing lake about 4 hours, Otsa to Kol 4 hours, (trains and bouta connecting, giving a total of 214 hours from Yokobema or 24 hours from Tokis, as against 24 hours to 30 hours (accord. ing a stemmerned weather by so. Regarding the journey iseif, tho traveller must by prepared to rough it more or less until more suitable carriages are provided:-These 1 understand era ne building: meantime there is absolutely no comfort to be found in either the lat or Sud class cars now in uso. Of the two I have found the 2nd class distinctly preferable. These carriages contain three parts. the divisions batween ezel.compartment enly coating up to the small of the back, so hard is plenty of ventilation and air, though fue pasts have no cushions and the back of one's hend te loen against hard woed A source of great discomfort, and I am afraid always. will be, is in the fact that the windare canzot. be kept opet owing to the oant of smoke and pisces of suit coal and dust that in their way in consequently one has either to bear the heat while shit up in the carriage, or put up! with the dust caused by the Japanese coal. agh... Neither in the carriages nor at the stations is there any convenience for clenuing oneself, alipoeg. Indies of whom I have soen qutoa uamber Bolines... travelling-must have found the absence of a cloak-room especially trying. There is nothing in the way of food or drink to be bongut at the stations to unit the foreign palate, veryone making the journey should provide himself with alf his requirements beforehand.
