HAKODATE:
་་
The Government have just laid a tramway from Mt. J. R. Thompson's jetty, and erected at the ses end of it two iron oranes for landing the iron pipes that are to be used in constract Eug, the water-works for the supply of the town. The tram runs to the upper end of the tour, where there is to be a big renarroir to cocsiva and store the water from a point on the Aka we, about five miles eastward of the town at the foot of the mountains. The reservoir being on the south-west side of the town, pipe will be laid from a through the atter, and the water of the Akagawa will be given the necessary bead by pumping works on She spot. It is a pretty big undertaking, but achinery and steam engines are capable of soy. ching-now-a-days. Many years ago the Har bur-master hore advised the Authorities to cat canal from a village called Kamada, lying just oa the outskirts of the town, so as to lead hence the water of a river that rushes through he village with great force, and make it deliver supply of pure water in the neighbourhood of the point where the reservoir is now being built. This fine stream has now been turned by a anal through the isthmus separating Hakodate from Kamade, and discharges its water uselessly nto Tsugara straits. Comunon-plaos folks do, ot appreciate the rationals of such operations, Japas Mail Correspondent.
