POLO CLUB...
This young and rising Club teda is débat on the 18th instant, when the number of people assembled to see a good exposition of the popular pastimo were not disappointed. The day was all that could to desired while the ground, thanks to the cars that has been bostaw ed on it since the Club was started, was in a very fair condition. The sides for the first game consisted of White: Captain Collinson(Captain) and Monere, ndrews and Woolcock; Reds: Captain Fletcher (Captain), and Mesers. Bethell and Gray. The ball is set rolling at 5.50 p.m., ail from the start the play was fast and accurate, the tyros with men and penise, showing a kems noes and activity that hodes well for the future success of the Club. The Bede, who wars rather stronger than their opponents, had them hedged in about their sticks after about ten minutes, and notwithstanding a number of well-worked attempts to get the ball out of auch dan gerous proximity to their gual they were gradually boston bask. Mr. Bethell then saw his appertunity, and by a well judged shot drew Brat blost for bis team (1-0). Stories of again the ball was rushed about faster than ear, the Whites striving hard to equalize matters. They succeeded in putting the Rod defensive tantins, and ones. or twice very nearly broke through their guard. Captain Collinsor collaring the ephora half way drove it by a pretty well bepbarded run very close or to the Heds goat, and for some minutes the Iatter had to do all they know to keep a from gos ing between their uprights, Mr. Gray, however, eventually reliaced the pressure and taking the ball on the more he kept possession, during a very pretty runs, right round the course and end ed a smart bit of play by newly depositing it on the Whites' goal by a diffealt and brilliant hit froit the near side (2-0).
The aides in the second game were Whites: Captain Collinson (Captain), Col. Craster, and Mecury. Woodcook and Anderson. Reds: Mr. Armstrong (Capt. Captain Fletcher, and Molars Bathell, Whitehead, and Gray. The game was started quickly with a gond lend.oft but flagged slightly after a time not being nearly so fast ks the first one. This was owing mainly to the in- creased wumber of players. After a quarter of an hour neither sido bad secured a goal, both teamma defending and carrying forward with great spirit. Owing to the increasing dick time was then called, a thorenghly enjoyable afternoon having been spent both by playere and on-
lookers.
Tha result of the opening day may be re- garded as a distinot seeness from every point. The grotat has been transformed from a stony waste into a really decent ranuing space, the ponies were handy and took wel their work, and considering the number of now honda it was surprising bow freely the ball was kept on the more. Some fast play may be looked for an the Club developes, and the neophytes are to be con- gratulated on the oredisable show that was nude, notwithstanding all the disadvantages that have hat to be overcome during the past twe months The energatio Hon. Secretary (Captain Flot- eher) informs us that the list of members is gradually swelling, and that the diffulty in ob- taining porties no longer exists. This being the ease we wry at last look forward to having a fairly established Polo. Club in the colony, No doubt the game will in time have a many devotees hero as the sister sporte of cricket and football.
