Felton showed that of the $15,000,000 worth of commerce which this lino carried, about $11,000,000 were exports and about 81,000,000 | ON importa. He states that in this Fespect it was the most advantageous foreign commerce which the United States had in proportion to the amount of business, done. The Postmaster-General stated that he would agree to give this Australiao line the fall amount of the non and inland postage on all mail matter carried by it, which would be something over $40,000 a year. Congress has already refused to appropriate any money for subsidies. it will be impossible for tho Postmaster-General Io,inorase the amount to this steamship lino. The Postmaster-General stated to Felfen that he would communicate at ones with the New Zealand and Australian Go- fernalents stating that the United States would give this line the full son and inland postage in order to maintain it. Whether the Australian and New Zealand Governments will accept this partial support is unknown.
