THE NORDDEUTSCHER LLOYD.
Kalkw writes--In another column of this journal under "German Trade at home." me gite a detailed account of the financial results attained during the past your by the Norddent- scher Lloyd. The reader will probably be most of all struck by the fact that the Imperial mail steamship service belonging to this Compsay. abows a total loss of 1,758,361 mk, notwitbalaud ing the subsidy of 4,400,000 wks, granted by the government. Of conise it stands to reason that those who were originally opposed to entire policy. of subvention grauts will be now mere firmly es tablished in their opposition than ever. Certain- ly, the above results do not in any way fulfil the hopes and expectations which led to the cubsidy be ing grouted. When the question whether an Imy pecial-absidy skuld be granted or cat had been de cided-perhaps even beforehand the President of the Board of Directors of the Norddeutscher Lloyd. Consul H. H. Maier, did all in his power, as a member of the Reichats, to monre the grant to the Lloyd, and to baut all competition out of the field. Herr H. H. Meier had often ecough doolared that he reckoned upon no profit for the first year, and that the Norddeutscher Lloyd could be context if in the first year the Imperial subsidy proved just sufficient to over the ex- pensas. A deficit of million marka or, after doluoting 300.000 mka, for the unlucky Tessol Preussen, a deficit of 1,453,000 mks. for the first year had not, however, bien calculated on even by Hore Maier. The loss which the Company has endured is shown by the fact that the dividend for the year 1957 only auoats to 5 p... when it might, under moro-favourable cir- cumstances, have equalled. 10 p. 9. und merɔ. This ausatisfactory result. seems to Jave added to the diferences among the directora, which ended in the resignation of Cousal If. H. Meier. Norr Meier was the founder of the Norddeutscher Lloyd. For 35 long-yoars be devoted his powers and great intelligence to the uralertaking. He and the Norddeutscher Lloyd seemed to be inseparable. And now? A single stop upon the road of the new exnuomical and subvention policy enthood to shatter that con- It is to be hoped that this imposing and really national nadertaking of the Norkient scher Lloyd will manage to tide over the diffient situation in which it now finds itself in conse- quence of having teken over a rail steamer subsidy, A good deal sa aiready been gained on the heifa Ine dimontinuing to touch at Trieste, and by touching in falare ut Genoa At the same time these devisions from the original plan, valuable as they are, serve to show in a very steang light how impracticable the originst plan AS.,
