In the event of his resignation you offer if he will accept the appointment of Mr. M. C. Stewart who, I understand, discharged the duties of the Office under an appointment from Pottinger previously to the arrival in the Colony of Mr. Martin.

Having been recommended by the Commissioners of the Municipality to Lord Stanley for the appointment of Superintendent of Police at Hong Kong, and that recommendation having been favourably received by his Lordship: I beg to state that I am authorized by the Commissioners of Police to inform you that I am ready to proceed to Hong Kong.
I request that you will be pleased to direct that the necessary arrangements be made for the passage of myself and the two officers appointed as Inspectors.
