It may seem straiga that the Japanese coal trata is of such rocent growth, ronailuing that to mines are so extrusive; and have busu oponed en long, Bat it shoaki ba rome chered that all commerce with other nations was restriḍtel-no- til within the last decade. ~ Aubther reason was that there really existed no reliabl's and constant supply from any other port except English coal, which was too expensive, at Forraosscoal, which, they say, will not born. Australian coal had not takon its plan fairly at a competitor. This with suroria many when it is remembered how long it is since sailing shipa bagan first to clear from Newcastle for China with onegoos of coal when it is remembered algo how the number of thara atige baa hæon amenally increasing. This kind of Brada, bawarer, in suiting ships was very dif- ferent from that which now bids fair to keep a permanent sapply on the market. Very rarely did say of the ships take cargas of oond on their ann adecuat, and the supply was very uncertain, and, so to splak, apaamortis. It will be found on inquiry that, though there were ocasional or captions, yet the most of the coal came for private orders, such as steamship companies, gas com panion, &o. But now the imports of Australian boslare beary, and it-not-unfrogaently-koppens that the market is glatted, and there are reship- manité to other Chinese Toris.

The obvious explanation of this is the intrase ing stenta traffe between China and Australia. This is the chief cause of so much coal boing brought from one coutiment. We buy, mach From China, and China, taken liftie or bothing from ne in return. The rossele new employed in the East-increasing trads rotarn with cool an their own account, as they are unable to obtain general cargo in saflsient quantities to fill ap

Probably there was little ground for the up. probensions of those who feared that Anstralia was being driven ont of the Chirose coal market by the Japanese article. Because in 1982 and 1383 (July to July) 93 oargees of Australius coal arrived in Hongkong, amounting to 99,236 tons, which sold at an average price áť 88,92 per ton, during the same period 50 cargoes arrived from Japan, amonating to 64,633 tons, sold at an avarage of 36.013:

But the next year reversed the positions in a remarkable way. In 1883-4 only 63 cargoes came to Hongkong from Australia, or 85,135 tons: while 67 cargoes came from Japan, or 114,241 tous. The large increase in fontags is due to the introduction of steamers of heary burilen into the trade. It was po wonder, there- |Os fore, that many came to the conclusion that Ja- pan was throwing Australia out of the Chireno bal market, and there are still many persons of experience who say that the daye of the coal trade between Australia and China are unmbered.

In the following year there ware grounds for mors cheerful view. The number of Austra Han cargosa rose to 29. and the tens of coal to 124,406. At the same timo Japan far outstripped these figures by sending, to less than 158,729 toos-of-cost to Hongkong-alovo. The price obtained during this period for the Australian article was $0.08 per ton. Japaneso fuel had risen very much meanwhile, but was still a trifle below these quotations, the average price being 26.53 per ton.

Of course the imports of about 10,000 tons of the quantity were re-shipped Australian coal were exceptionally heavy, and to Shanghai The market in Apail, 1885, was is an oscited state, and a considerable advance took place in prices, due to the Admiralty tray: ing freely in anticipation of war with Russia, and conseguently especulative parebosors. A very colebrated American Minister to Ger many would never receive guests not personally known to kim nutil the day after they had noti- fied him of their intention to sail In the mean- time he woull swertain what they had done, and on mosting thom would say: "I am de- bighted to meet you ; your great work, so and so, is known throughout the world, and w ́s etandard in the United States; cr. "The fame of your infiusura ay z sisteman saxlanded far beyond the bounds of the country you so worthily re present; " or, "Your exploite at the battle of --- have thrilled patriots everywhere." Thus they were delighted, and the Minister obtained the rapatation of universal knowledge."

"To give the cos" is a common phrase. 40 nording to most dictionaries, "cae" (in its the atrical souse) is derived from the Latin "cauda," through the Franch "queue" and the suure -authorities say that it means the last words of a spooch which the actor, who has to reply, natches and regards as a notice to begin. This theoryje, perhaps, supported by the fast that, in, French kaatrical phrases, what we call the "cas" is styled the reigns." But Mr. Wedgewood maintains that the above otymology is quite erroneous He saya that "end" is derived from "Q" the first letter of bin Latin “queado,” which used to be marked on the Roraz players parts to show when they were to enter and speak.
