I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your Lordship's despatch, calling my attad. tun to a local exhibition at Gotha of the Ger- maa exports finding special favour in the marketa of China 1 bave made inquiry here resposting similar arhibitions in other parts of Germany, and from the information kindly given me by Count Bercham I am inclius to think that the initiative in procuring the orNorth Chías Insurance-Tia. 300 per share port samples is due to the local bodies of com-Yangtze Insurance Association-Tie. 118 per merce in Saroy; and not to the issue of any special instruction by the Imperial Government Chinese Insurance Company, Eimited-$174 por to their Consalar agents in China Ceant Barchen explained to me that the Gerorament left the institution of such exhibitions entirely to the private bodies interested, but that they bad hathorised the German Consals; abroad to entezinta correspondanes with the local chan bars of commerce in Germany, and to attend to say reasonable applications or requests which they might at any time receive from them. He knew that some of those bodies had at times revived samples from Australis and other countries of articles most suitable for or port. The only expors sample exhibition in this district is the one recently established at Berlin. alluded to in my report on the depression of trade in Germany. It has as yet little in it worthy of special attention feet which Mr. Kearic Mir- ray, who arrived here a few days ago with a lattor from your lordship, had, I understand, an opper- tunity of personally ascertaining. The most in teresting establishments of this nature ate at Stuttgart and Frankfort. An exhibition is an nounced hers for September 16th, initiated by the Central Society for encouraging German trading interests abroad. It is to be solusively davoted to exhibits of South American exports and im poris. The first place will be given to specimens of South Americii raw materials and son fao- tur, and the second to. Anch Geriau products a have been found to be especially adapted for expert and sale in the South American States. German producers are arrankly invited by the socisty to send to the exbibition samples of all their goods for which they consider they can court on a profitable market in the evoulaies in question. The cost fer exhibition by German manufactures is fixed at 60 marks, or £3 for each square metre of Boor or well accommodation. I shall be careful to give timely notice of any fur ther exhibition of the same sort proposed to be
